![]() POETS Carl Schell ![]() Carl was born and raised in Bergen County, New Jersey. His early interests included sports and comic books, but his love for music easily topped both. After taking five years of piano and two years of violin lessons, he scrapped both and chose the drums over the trombone. During his high school tenure, Carl played in the orchestra, percussion ensemble and band. He graduated from Tenafly High in 1992. Seeking a communications education, Carl moved to Boston to attend Emerson College. Initially a Journalism Major, he graduated in 1996 with a B.S. in Music Production and Engineering with a Minor in Creative Writing. Outside of class, his primary focus was writing lyrics and rehearsing with Poets And Madmen. After school he spent two more years working and living in the area, as well as playing drums with the band. With Boston having run its course, Carl returned to New Jersey in September 1998. He began working in publishing in 1999, an industry he still finds himself in today. Carl resides in Ringwood, New Jersey with his girlfriend Sara. They recently bought their first house and are expecting their first child in August. When not working, Carl enjoys traveling, reading, writing, fantasy football and listening to Widespread Panic.
![]() Jaysin has been involved with music ever since he was three, when he started taking piano lessons. Five years later, he picked up a saxophone and, as a member of the woodwind section in various stage bands, quickly discovered the thrill of performing live. By age fifteen he began studying guitar full-time. After graduating from Tenafly High in 1991, Jaysin attended Berklee College of Music, where he earned a degree in Contemporary Writing and Production. While living in Boston, Jaysin collaborated with a number of local writers and produced music in a vast array of genres including new age, techno, reggae and musicals, while always focusing on the heavily orchestrated sound of Poets And Madmen. Jaysin moved back to the Tri-State area in 2000. He currently works in real estate, and he loves to prepare New York Yankees spreadsheets that would give baseball statisticians wet dreams. MADMEN
Tim Hayward Tim has lived his entire life around the Boston area. He played with a handful of bands in East BostonLynx, primarilyand was the first person to join Carl and Jaysin in Poets And Madmen. His influence on them was greater than any person in or out of the band. Tim still plays the guitar and plays with his son, Tim, Jr. A self-proclaimed masochist, he will forever love to watch the Boston Bruins lose. Hans Beichel A native of South Boston and a veteran of the cover band scene, Hans was the first and only bassist to seriously jam with Poets And Madmen. God only knows where Hans is today. Art Alvarez Art Alvarez came to Boston in 1996 from Santa Fe, New Mexico, where he had lived since childhood. He sang with a number of bands, Inner Sanctum and Trazom to name a couple. Art was the third and final vocalist to join Poets And Madmen. Art continues to live in Boston with his wife Rachel. Paul Merullo Like Tim, Paul is a native of East boston. He was the first vocalist, and youngest member ever, of Poets And Madmen. Paul had two stints in the band, and was Carl's favorite of all the singers who worked with Poets And Madmen. Studio Cats Kevin Daughtry In 1996, Kevin relocated to Boston from North Carolina with his band The Amazing Carries. After Kevin recorded lead vocals for Poets And Madmen, The Carries carried on as Friends of Rachel in 1998. Later that year, Kevin and his band moved back to North Carolina. Chris Eloranta Chris came from Missouri to attend Berklee College of Music on a full scholarship. Sharing a common listening perspective with Carl and Jaysin, the 18-year-old quickly agreed to play the flute on the album, and even wrote his own solo in "Stronghold." Steve Silverman Steve lived in the same apartment building in Boston as Jaysin did in 1997-98. As an investment banker he's not to be trusted, but as a saxophonist he proved his talk was no trash. Kate Sadowsky Kate was trained as a vocalist at Berklee College of Music. Her amazing sense of harmony garners her praise as the most marvelous of shower singers by neighbors and friends. She co-wrote a pop song with Jaysin entitled "The One That Mattered" and currently resides in San Francisco. Ellice Grosky With vocal training in jazz and musical theatre at Berklee College of Music, Ellice is the lead singer of Cozmik Corkscrew. She currently lives in Nevada. Lynn Sher Lynn possesses a vocal passion that cannot be learned despite her training at Berklee College of Music. Her whereabouts are unknown. Maybe she is with Hans...
